“Technology will not replace great teachers but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational.” - George Couros

Years ago I was told that we were preparing students for careers that didn’t yet exist. Now, more than ever, I believe this to be true.

The AI revolution is here, yet our students seem less prepared than ever, and many teachers are resisting the inevitable.

If you are a teacher or professor and you are not embracing AI and virtual reality, you risk being left behind.

vr use in education

The world is constantly evolving, and within the next decade, educators who fail to adapt will become obsolete.

Yes, there are misconceptions, fears of the unknown, and skepticism about the usefulness of these tools. But, trust me, AI and VR are here to stay.

The best thing we can do for our profession and most importantly, for the students we serve is to learn how to use them effectively.

The next question you might have is:

How do you get started?

Start by exploring the resources available at your school.

  • Does your school allow the use of Copilot or ChatGPT?

  • Do you have access to VR equipment?

  • Is there already a professional development in place for these tools?

Asking these questions will get the ball rolling and will likely connect you with colleagues who share your interest in this topic.

Many educators hesitate to embrace AI and virtual reality (VR) due to misconceptions, skepticism, or lack of guidance. But, change is already happening, and those who don’t adapt risk falling behind.

At Utah Valley University (UVU), I developed a three-week self-paced professional (PD) program designed to help humanities instructors integrate VR-based learning into their courses.

The goal?

To bridge the gap between traditional instruction and immersive, technology-driven experiences.

To bridge the gap between traditional instruction and immersive, technology-driven experiences

This training provided faculty with hands-on experience, practical implementation strategies, and real-world examples of how VR can transform student engagement.

This kind of structured PD is exactly what teachers need to demystify AI and VR and see their benefits firsthand.

If universities are already taking these steps, K-12 educators must follow suit to ensure students are prepared for an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Are you ready to take the first step? Start by exploring the resources available at your school, and if there isn’t a PD program in place, advocate for one!
